The Origin

The Viking Age sword was developed and produced during the Early Middle Ages, roughly between the 8th and 11th centuries (c. 750–1050 AD).

Despite its name, many of the finest “Viking” swords were actually manufactured in the Frankish Empire (modern-day France and Germany) rather than in Scandinavia itself. Frankish bladesmiths developed advanced steel-smelting techniques, creating famed trademark blades such as the Ulfberht swords. Norsemen acquired these high-status blades through trade, gift-exchange, or raiding.

Its Evolutionary History

  • The Ancestor: The Viking sword evolved from the earlier Roman Spatha and Migration Period swords.

  • The Golden Era: Norse craftspeople often added custom hilts featuring signature lobed pommels and short crossguards decorated with silver, bronze, or iron wire. The weapons were prized single-handed sidearms designed for slashing alongside shield walls.

  • The Legacy: By the 11th century, as combat changed, these designs lengthened and shifted into the double-edged arming swords used by medieval knights.
